Unpacking the Mission Statement Themes Inspired and guided by the Holy Spirit. Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit; and there are varieties of services, but the same Lord; and there are varieties of activities, but it is the same God who activates all of them in everyone. To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good. (1 Cor 12: 4-7) Nourished by the Word and the Eucharist. We the Church are nourished spiritually at the twofold table of God’s Word and of the Eucharist. From the one we grow in wisdom and from the other in holiness. In the Word of God the divine covenant is announced. In the Eucharist the new and everlasting covenant is renewed. (Cf Sacrosanctum Concilium 51; Presbyterorum Ordinis 18; also Dei Verbum 21; Ad gentes 6. Cf. GIRM (old version) 8.) United by faith. At baptism we are asked whether we believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth, in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was born of the Virgin Mary, was crucified, died, and was buried, rose from the dead, and is now seated at the right hand of the Father in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and life everlasting? To each question, we answer "I do." Then the celebrant says:“This is our faith. This is the faith of the Church. We are proud to profess it, in Christ Jesus our Lord.” (ICEL, 1974) Welcoming and hospitable communities. May the God of steadfastness and encouragement grant you to live in harmony with one another, in accordance with Christ Jesus, so that together you may with one voice glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. Welcome one another, therefore, just as Christ has welcomed you, for the glory of God. (Rom 15: 5-7) Journeying together in the Love of God. All the believers were one in heart and mind. With great power the apostles continued to testify to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus. And God’s grace was so powerfully at work in them all. (Acts 4: 32-33) Sharing leadership. But Jesus called them to him and said, 'You know that among the gentiles the rulers lord it over them, and great men make their authority felt. Among you this is not to happen. No; anyone who wants to become great among you, must be your servant and anyone who wants to be first among you must be your slave, just as the Son of man came not to be served but to serve.” (Mat 20: 25-28) Reaching out. And Jesus came and said to them, "All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything that I have commanded you. And remember, I am with you always, to the end of the age."(Mat 28:18-20) |
